• A Real Pain, 2024 - ★★★

"Everything Is Illuminated" is a beautifully crafted film with perfect elements like the soundtrack, road trip vibes, and screenplay. It features many laugh-out-loud moments.

In "A Real Pain," while the character Benji is unique—lacking a mobile phone and engaging in real conversations—something feels off. The direction or story might be lacking, as Benji shows no development throughout; he remains the same person from the beginning to the end.

  • Heretic, 2024 - ★★★

Hugh Grant's performance is strong, and while the debate between belief and disbelief is intriguing, it would have benefited from more emphasis, as much of the focus was on the horror elements.

  • Maharaja, 2024 - ★★★★★

From 10,000-foot view, it's a revenge story, but the way the story was told is brilliant. The story is fragmented and put in such a way that it keeps the viewer on the edge until the end. This is Nithilan Saminathan second movie, as both writer and director, he did a fantastic job.

  • Manjummel Boys, 2024 - ★★★★

Even though it's based on a brave, fascinating real story, the director did a very good job of showing it to the audience. The timing of the background score is impeccable, especially at the end when friends drag their friend from the abyss, the song "Guna" kicks in with the lyrics - "Humans cannot understand this love, it's pure as fire." This gave me goosebumps. The background score and screenplay are amazing.

  • Mad Max, 1979 - ★★★

So, I watched 'Furiosa' and thought, 'Hey, let's dive into the Mad Max universe!' It's basically a cop chasing down bikers, and George Miller was like, 'Who needs VFX? Let's just floor it!'.

  • Godzilla Minus One, 2023 - ★★★★★

It always fascinates me how a group of small beings can bring down a gigantic monster. This movie is set in post-World War II Japan, a nation already ravaged by conflict, and now facing yet another crisis: "Godzilla," hence the title "Godzilla Minus One." The film excels in showcasing the meticulous planning required to defeat Godzilla. One day, I hope to find time to play the game "SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS," where you must fight and bring down massive giants.

  • Monkey Man, 2024 - ★★★½

Great work by Dev Patel. Hatred gives rise to monstrosity and evil, originating from ignorance, which is fueled by impatience and a lack of understanding of nature. I'll conclude my rant here.

At one point in the film, during "Monkey Man's" training session to release his anger on a punching bag, there are intermittent cut scenes for each punch. In these scenes, he expresses anger towards evil, individuals who abuse others (highlighted by a disturbing scene of a man aggressively hurting a woman), and questions through his punches. It is uncertain if this particular aspect influenced Dev Patel to create the movie.

Some scenes seemed surreal, like the fight club scenes; unsure if such exists in India. Mentions of Hindu deity Hanuman, a hybrid auto-rickshaw chase, and fights with crackers felt distinct.

  • Fight Club, 1999 - ★★★★★

David Fincher's masterpiece, "Fight Club," is arguably the best adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's work. Many whom I've recommended the film to have had varied reactions: some found it too violent, others claimed they knew the twist from the start, while a few thought it was just an okay movie. However, I believe they missed the essence of the film, embodied by the character Tyler Durden and his profound philosophy, which likely contributed to its status as a cult classic.

The Narrator, like many of us, is ensnared by societal expectations.
    > "Look, nobody takes this more seriously than me. That condo was my life, okay? I loved every stick of furniture in that place. That was not just a bunch of stuff that got destroyed, it was ME!" -- Narrator

    Enter "Tyler Durden."
    > "The things you own end up owning you." - Tyler Durden

Tyler assists the protagonist in breaking free from his comfort zone.
    > "It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything." - Tyler Durden

While I won't list all the rules of Fight Club, the eighth rule is pivotal:
"And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight." - Tyler Durden

This is where some question the necessity of violence. Here, the 'opponent' could symbolize any current challenge—face it or flee.

    Echoing Rocky Balboa:
"You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."

In the "cigarette burns" scene, Tyler splices single frames of adult content into family films. In the closing titles, a human penis flashes briefly, suggesting Tyler could be anyone—perhaps even the projectionist or the director (David Fincher).

A beautiful, timeless classic. I've watched it multiple times and will continue to do so. Highly recommended.

  • Road House, 2024 - ★★★½

A wandering warrior hired to settle a dispute. Sounds familiar? Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo or Sergio Leone's A Few Dollars More. In all these movies, one common theme is that the warrior has no personal objective or motive. He is ready to die fighting evil.

    > I am afraid. I'm afraid of what happens when somebody pushes me too far. - Dalton

  • Jigarthanda DoubleX, 2023 - ★★★★★

Achieving the high standards set by a first installment is challenging, and Karthik Subbaraj has succeeded once more. Initially, I was somewhat doubtful about the casting, particularly regarding Lawrence, yet this may very well be Lawrence's finest performance.

  • Jigarthanda, 2014 - ★★★★★

This film by Karthik Subbaraj is outstanding—a true breath of fresh air. Despite numerous recommendations from friends, I initially delayed watching it. The movie boasts an exceptional background score. Bobby Simha delivered a compelling performance and truly deserves greater recognition.

  • Tetris, 2023 - ★★★★½

As a child, I played Tetris on a handheld device. It's an excellent game and was incredibly addictive. I was unaware that it originated in Russia, developed by Alexey Pajitnov. Additionally, the efforts Nintendo made to secure the rights to it, with assistance from Henk Rogers, in order to launch it alongside the Game Boy were significant.

I first saw this movie as a child, expecting little, yet by the end, I was in tears. My father came in and reminded me that it was just a film, but it had completely drawn me in.

Best Indian adaptation of “The Godfather.” Ram Gopal Varma later produced similar adaptations with Gayam (in Telugu) and Sarkar (in Hindi).
